Covid-165

One Year on and China Has Murdered Over 1.5 Million People

It’s pretty much one year since Covid-19 emerged in China and spread across the world. Note that it is not a year since we first found about Covid-19 because the Chinese did their very best to cover it up whilst also allowing infected citizens to travel the globe. Go figure. According to my preferred data source, as of today there have been 76,620,145 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 1,691,772 deaths. Let’s pause for a moment. China has murdered over 1.5 million people. Covid-19 is still rampant and although vaccines have been approved for use we are a long way from being in a state where Covid-19 is under some time of control. Far from it. According to my data source the USA reported 189,415 new cases yesterday along with 2,556 new deaths. The total number of confirmed cases in the USA is 18,077,768 cases with 323,401 deaths. These figures are staggering. India features next in the statistics with 10,031,659 confirmed cases and 145,513 deaths. I’m not going to continue because the point has surely been made. Millions of cases and over 1.5 million deaths. Furthermore, the virus shows no signs of abating. As reported by SBS News, it would appear that there is a new, rapidly spreading variant of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom. The result is a return to lockdown measures. Whilst Australia has been relatively untouched by Covid-19 another SBS News story reports on a coronavirus cluster in Sydney’s Northern Beaches area which has grown to around 70 cases. This number is of course trivial compared to figures from around the world but what it does show is that we are along way from having eradicated the virus.

China Continues to Exhibit Hubris and Arrogance Despite Beijing’s Guilt

There is a fascinating story from ABC News that dips briefly into China’s history as a prelude to recommending books to read about China. The story reports that whilst WWII had a significant death toll, the next three deadliest conflicts in the world have all happened in China. For example, “The Second Sino-Japanese War between 1937 and 1945 cost 25 million civilian lives and another four million Chinese and Japanese soldiers“. The 17th Qing Dynasty conquest  also killed around 25 million people. Perhaps this is why China does not seem to be in any way concerned about the fact that Covid-19 has killed over 1.5 million people. After all, that figure is a drop in the ocean compared with 25 million people dying in conflicts within China. However, the ABC News report points to the fact that Xi Jinping wants to bring about the end of what he sees as 100 years of domination and humiliation by the foreign powers. Why would Beijing apologise or be contrite about releasing Covid-19 upon the world if the mindset is that the West has humiliated China for one hundred years? Perhaps Xi Jinping senses that China’s time is now. This would certainly account for China’s aggression and bullying during 2020. It would also account for Beijing’s expansionism with their Belt and Road Initiative being a key example of global aspirations. However, note that Beijing has been unable to bully Australia into submission despite devastating Australia’s export market with China. How embarrassing. Xi Jinping can’t coerce a tiny island with a population of 25 million people.

We Should Be Fearful About What Trump Might Do Before Biden Is Sworn In

In my opinion, Trump is certifiably insane and yet there he is, the President of the United States. Personally, I think that we can count ourselves lucky that he did not start a major military conflict during his term as president. That said, he still has time. As reported by CNN News, Trump apparently held a very heated meeting in his Oval Office on Friday 18th, December. Before I get into the details, I want to note one very odd fact. The Lawyer Sidney Powell was present at the meeting. Powell was at one time a member of Trump’s legal team. Then she started to spout conspiracy theories about rigged Venezuelan voting machines and Trump distanced himself from because, basically, she sounded like a crackpot. Now, however, it would appear that she is back with team Trump. So, to the meeting. CNN reports that, the “session began as an impromptu gathering but devolved and eventually broke out into screaming matches at certain points as some of Trump’s aides pushed back on Powell and Flynn’s more outrageous suggestions about overturning the election“. Flynn apparently raised the possibility, not for the first time, with Trump that he might declare martial law as part of his attempt to overturn the election result. Others in the meeting pushed back “forcefully”. Another key point in the meeting occurred when White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and counsel Pat Cipollone, pushed back against the idea of naming Powell as special counsel to investigate voter fraud. Beyond the ins and outs of the actual meeting, the most concerning point is what Trump might do. Let’s face it, there is significant cause for concern when Trump is being advised that he might institute martial law.
